HEALING FROM THE INSIDE OUT

"Healing doesn't mean the damage never existed; it means the damage no longer controls your life".

  • Individual counseling is more than just talking; it’s a partnership. In our sessions, we work together to navigate the complexities of your life, identify the barriers holding you back, and develop a roadmap for healing. Whether you are dealing with a specific crisis or simply feel 'stuck,' this is your time to be heard, validated, and empowered.

    • The Atmosphere: "Our sessions are a private, non-judgmental space where you are the priority. It is a one-on-one conversation tailored entirely to your pace and comfort level."

    • The Approach: "We won't just talk about problems; we’ll explore the roots of your challenges and collaborate on practical tools you can use in your daily life."

    • The Logistics: "Each session typically lasts 50 minutes. Whether we meet in person or via secure video, the focus remains on providing you with consistent, undivided support."

  • We believe that therapy should be as unique as the individual. Our approach is developmentally appropriate and focuses on building a strong, trusting relationship from the very first session.

    • For Younger Children: We often use Play Therapy techniques and creative activities like drawing, storytelling, and games. Since children often communicate through play, these methods help them express feelings they may not have the words for yet.

    • For Adolescents: Sessions are typically talk-based but remain flexible and collaborative. We focus on building emotional intelligence, healthy coping strategies for stress, and the confidence to navigate peer and family relationships.

  • Relationship therapy is not about finding who is "right," but about understanding the patterns that keep you stuck. These 75 to 90-minute sessions focus on the relationship as the client, helping both partners feel heard and supported.

What to Expect in Couples Sessions:

    • Neutral Ground: A balanced environment where the therapist acts as an advocate for the relationship, ensuring neither partner feels "ganged up on".

    • Pattern Mapping: Identifying recurring cycles of conflict—often called "stuck places"—to understand how they start and how to de-escalate them.

    • Active Skill-Building: Learning and practicing evidence-based communication techniques, such as active listening or stress-reduction conversations, to use in your daily life.

    • Shared Goal Setting: Collaboratively defining your "North Star"—the vision for the relationship you want to build together.

    Common Goals for Couples:

    • Rebuilding trust after a betrayal or loss of connection.

    • Navigating major life transitions, such as parenthood or career changes.

    • Improving emotional and physical intimacy.

    • Managing recurring disagreements about finances, parenting, or family dynamics.

A Note on Confidentiality: To ensure transparency and trust, many couples therapists operate with a "No Secrets" policy, meaning they will not hold significant information shared by one partner privately from the other during the course of joint therapy.

  • Family sessions are about more than just solving problems; they are about strengthening the "roots" of your home to help everyone flourish. These sessions provide a collaborative space where family members can speak openly, feel heard, and work together toward a more harmonious life.

    Family Counselling at Heartwood

In family therapy, we view the family as a unique ecosystem. When one person is struggling, the whole family feels it. These sessions—typically 75 to 90 minutes—are designed to bridge gaps in communication and rebuild a sense of "team."

What to Expect in Family Sessions:

    • A Balanced Space: The therapist ensures that every family member, from the youngest to the oldest, has a safe opportunity to share their perspective.

    • Understanding Roles: Exploring the different roles family members take on and how those roles impact the way you interact with one another.

    • New Communication Tools: Moving away from "blame" and toward "connection" by learning how to express needs and set healthy boundaries without conflict.

    • Collaborative Problem-Solving: Working together to create practical strategies for managing daily stressors, transitions, or behavioral challenges.

  • At Heartwood Counselling and Therapy, we are honored to provide mental health services through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program. We are committed to offering a safe, trauma-informed space that honors Indigenous perspectives, traditions, and the journey toward holistic healing.

Our Approach to Culturally Sensitive Care

We recognize that true healing involves the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Our sessions are grounded in:

    • Cultural Respect: We value Indigenous ways of knowing and integrate cultural safety into every conversation.

    • Trauma-Informed Support: We provide gentle, expert care that acknowledges the impact of intergenerational trauma and systemic history.

    • Holistic Growth: Much like the heartwood of a tree, we focus on strengthening your core resilience to support your long-term wellbeing.

  • Heartwood Counselling and Therapy is proud to offer Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training through Opening Minds. This evidence-based course equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognize signs of mental health challenges, provide initial support, and guide individuals toward appropriate professional help.

Mental Health First Aid is designed for anyone who wants to better support family members, friends, coworkers, employees, students, or community members experiencing a mental health concern or crisis. Participants will learn practical strategies for responding to mental health and substance use challenges while reducing stigma and promoting understanding.

Whether you are an individual looking to expand your knowledge or an organization seeking training for your team, Mental Health First Aid provides valuable tools that can make a meaningful difference.

Charlene Robert BA, BSW, RSW

Counsellor

I am originally from Saskatoon and have a deep passion for sports, mental health, and creating peaceful, supportive environments where individuals and families can thrive. As both a sports enthusiast and a parent who enjoys watching my children play the sports they love, I understand the important connection between mental wellness, confidence, resilience, and personal growth—both on and off the field/ice.

For over 20 years, I have worked with families, youth, and children in a variety of roles, supporting individuals, couples, and families through difficult and transitional times in their lives. I am passionate about helping clients create a more peaceful journey by meeting them where they are, identifying their unique needs, and empowering them to recognize their strengths and build resilience along the way.

I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina and my BA in Sociology from the University of Saskatchewan, and I currently teach at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. I am also currently completing my Master of Social Work (MSW), having finished my coursework and now writing my thesis to obtain my degree.

In addition to my clinical and educational work, I am a Mental Health First Aid Facilitator and a Level I Reiki practitioner, which further supports my holistic and compassionate approach to wellness and healing.

Education is a lifelong journey for me, and I continue to pursue training in a variety of therapeutic approaches. My practice is grounded in a strength-based, anti-oppressive approach, and I draw from modalities including Interpersonal Therapy, Narrative Therapy, CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based therapies to support clients in finding balance, healing, and lasting wellness.
